A sheriff or high sheriff was the monarch's representative in a county. The sheriff was responsible for law enforcement and some taxation, such as the Ship Money. The sheriff also received writs for parliamentary elections for all constituencies within their jurisdiction and returned the winning candidates. In shire constituencies, the sheriff managed the elections directly.[1]
This personnel role should usually be used with a shrievalty, which represents the sheriff's jurisdiction as a separate area, because it did not always coincide with a county at large.
