Archdeaconry | Ecclesiastical division of a diocese under an archdeacon, further divided into rural deaneries and parishes. In 17th century, parishes were directly under the archdeacon as no rural deans were appointed, but names of deaneries survived. |
Chapelry | Subdivision of a parish for ecclesiastical purposes. Has its own chapel or church which is subordinate to the parish church. |
Diocese | Ecclesiastical area under a bishop based at a cathedral. Divided into archdeaconries. |
Parish | Basic civil and ecclesiastical unit in Britain. Contained one or more small rural settlements or part of a large settlement. |
Peculiar | Ecclesiastical jurisdiction outside the normal hierarchy of dioceses and archdeaconries. Parishes in a peculiar jurisdiction might be directly under a bishop or the dean and chapter of a cathedral. |
Presbytery | Group of parishes for ecclesiastical purposes in Scotland. |
Province (ecclesiastical) | Ecclesiastical division of a country consisting of several dioceses under an archbishop. |
Rural deanery | Group of parishes for ecclesiastical purposes in England and Wales. No rural deans were appointed in 17th century but the names of deaneries survived as areas within an archdeaconry. |
Synod | Group of presbyteries for ecclesiastical purposes in Scotland. |
